Hamiltons Split Opening Day

Hamiltons score Team USA's first-ever Mixed Doubles victory; fall to Team Canada in the nightcap.

Price Atkinson - GANGNEUNG, South Korea - Team USA's popular and charismatic duo of Matt and Becca Hamilton made history last night, scoring the first-ever Mixed Doubles curling win in Olympic history for the Stars and Stripes.

The Hamiltons scored a 9-3 win over the Olympic Athletes from Russia's Anastasia Bryzgalova and Alexander Krushelnitskiy in the opening draw. Competing in their first Olympic Games, the McFarland, Wisc., native appeared loose and confident from the start.

"Nice to get out on the ice, surprisingly didn't feel any jitters," Matt Hamilton said after the win. "Felt confident going out there. We played strong and had a good win."

Jumping ahead 3-0 after the first end with hammer, the Russians came back with two in the second end. After netting just one in the third end, the #HamFam stole one in the fourth and a deuce in the fifth end to build a 7-2 lead.

"You know in mixed doubles you're never safe with a three-point lead," Becca Hamilton said.

Team USA was in-fact safe in the opener before moving on to face Team Canada's John Morris and Kaitlyn Lawes in the nightcap.

The Americans and Canadians were sharp from the very start, alternating singles in a defensive battle through the first four ends of play. Tied 2-2 at the fourth end break, Morris and Lawes broke things open in the fifth end.

Team Canada took advantage of a couple of misses in the fifth, scoring the game's only multiple point end with three for a 6-4 lead. The Hamiltons came back with a single in the sixth and stole one in the seventh thanks to Becca's buried final shot and a Lawes miss to trail 6-5 going to the eighth without hammer.

"Yeah, some of the misses were communication errors, which we can work on and some were just missed shots which happen," Matt told NBC Sports after the loss to Team Canada. For now, we're just gonna take our lumps, lick our wounds and come back firing tomorrow."

Becca shot a game-high 98 percent to lead Team USA, who'll face Switzerland later today at 6:35 pm (EST).
