Switzerland Joins Canada in Battle for Olympic Doubles Curling Gold

Gangneung, Republic of Korea – Switzerland's Jenny Perret and Martin Rios beat Anastasia Bryzgalova and Aleksandr Krushelnitckii, of the Olympic Athletes from Russia team (OAR), by 7-5 in Monday evening’s second semi-final of the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018 mixed doubles competition to qualify for the gold medal final.

In that final Switzerland, the current mixed doubles world champions, will face Canada to contest what will be the inaugural Olympic title in curling's mixed doubles discipline. Before that, OAR will play Norway, who lost their semi-final earlier on Monday to Canada, for bronze medals.

Switzerland opened the semi-final strongly, scoring two points in the first end with a hit and stay by Perret, but OAR responded with two points of their own in the second end. Switzerland then took one point in the third end and stole a single point in the fourth end when Krushelnitckii threw away his last stone rather than risk further damage to the one point he was forced to give up.

This gave Switzerland a 4-2 lead at the break but a hit and stay in the fifth end by OAR gave them two points and leveled the game at 4-4.

OAR took the lead for the first time with a single point steal in the sixth end when a Swiss tap-up attempt did not work, but Switzerland re-took the lead at 6-5 in the seventh end with an open draw for two points.

In the eighth end, OAR's Krushelnitckii was wide with his final tap as he attempted to score two for the win, giving Switzerland another steal of one point for a 7-5 win and a place in the gold medal final.

The bronze medal game will take place tomorrow (Tuesday 13 February) at 09:05 Korean Standard Time (KST), while the gold medal game will follow later that evening at 20:05 KST.
