LAS VEGAS, Nevada - It was a battle for Brad Gushue and his St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador based rink on Monday afternoon at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas. Italy's Joel Retornaz and his team were solid all game, pressuring Gushue and taking the advantage into the final end.

Italy's fourth stone thrower Amos Mosaner faced a double-takeout on his last to remove the Canadian stone and upset the Canadian champions, but his stone curled too much missing the second stone, leaving the yellow Canadian-counter for the point.

Canada started the game strong, opening with 2 in the first and third ends for an early 4-1 lead. Italy rebounded with 2 in the fourth end, then forced Canada into a single point in the fifth end. In the sixth end, things started to change for the Italian side with a miss by Gushue on his last, leaving Mosaner the draw for three and a 6-5 lead for Italy.

The Italians played strong in the second half, holding Canada to a single in the seventh end, the scored a single of their own in the eight when Mosaner made a tap facing five Canadian stones to take back the lead. In the ninth end, play remained open though an Italian miss left Gushue with a hit for two on his last, his stone rolling out leaving Canada only one and a tie game without hammer coming home.

USA's Greg Persinger struggled to make his last shot for a win for the second time today, this time coming an inch short in the extra end against Scotland's Bruce Mouat. Scotland's 7-6 win improves their record to 3-1 keeping pace with Canada.

China's De Jia Zou won 9-4 over Korea's Chang-Min Kim to level both team's records at 3-1 while Switzerland's Marc Pfister got their first win of the week with a 7-4 win over Germany's Alexander Baumann.
