Brad Gushue wins Humpty's Champions Cup

Brad Gushue (St. John's, NL) wins the Humpty's Champions Cup, defeating Glenn Howard (Islington, ON) 8-2 at Winsport Olympic Park in Calgary. Gushue with Mark Nichols at third, Brett Gallant and Geoff Walker on the front end take home the $40,000CDN first place cheque along with 72.953 world ranking points, while Howard receives $32,000CDN and 57.320 world ranking points for their second place finish.

After a first end blank, Howard stole 1 in the second end to take an early lead, then forced Gushue to a single in the third end. Gushue got a steal in the fourth end, then forced Howard to a single in the fifth end to tie the game at 2. Gushue broke open the game in the 6th end scoring 3 in the sixth end, then added a steal of 3 in the seventh end for the 8-2 win.

In the semifinals, Gushue defeated Kevin Koe (Calgary, AB) 7-5 and Howard defeated Bruce Mouat (Edinburgh, Scotland) 9-5. Koe and Mouat earned $12,000CDN and 44.293 ranking points for their semifinal finishes. In the quarterfinals, Gushue defeated Jason Gunnlaugson (Winnipeg, MB) 4-2, Howard defeated Rich Ruohonen (Seattle, United States) 7-6, while Koe defeated Brendan Bottcher (Edmonton, AB) 5-2 and Mouat defeated Mike McEwen (Winnipeg, MB) 7-6 in an extra end. Gunnlaugson, Ruohonen, Bottcher and McEwen earned $8,000CDN along with 31.265 ranking points for their quarterfinal finishes.

Gushue went 4-0 in the 15 team round-robin pools qualifying round. In their opening game, Gushue defeated Tyler Tardi (Langley, BC) 8-3, won against Brad Jacobs (Sault Ste Marie, ON) 5-4, and Ruohonen 7-2, going on to defeated Reid Carruthers (Winnipeg, MB) 7-3 in their final qualifying round match.
