Homan/Edin Win Arctic Cup Mixed Doubles Title

Canada's Rachel Homan and Sweden's Niklas Edin paired up to win the Arctic Cup Mixed Doubles Championship held last weekend in Dudinka, Russia at the Taimyr Ice Arena. Homan/Edin defeated Gina Aitken/Duncan Menzies of Stirling, Scotland 7-6 in the Final to win the last event of the ISS World Mixed Doubles Curling Tour season. Homan/Edin take home $14,528 CDN while Aitken/Menzies received $9,340 for their runner-up finish.

Homan/Edin started with hammer, scoring a single in the first end with Aitken/Menzies squaring the game with a single of their own in the second end. Homan/Edin scored 2 in the third end with Aitken/Menzies scoring 3 to take the lead, then stealing another point in the fifth end to extend their lead to 5-3. Homan/Edin bounced back in the sixth end, using their power-play to score 3 points, then forced Aitken/Menzies to a single on their power-play to send the game to the final end tied where Homan/Edin scored a single for the 7-6 win.

Maria Komarova/Daniil Goryachev (Moscow, Russia) won 8-3 over Zuzana Hajkova/Tomas Paul (Prague, Czech Republic) in the Bronze medal game to claim a spot for the host country on the podium. Komarova/Goryachev take home $6,745 CDN while Hajkova/Paul received $4,515.

The city of Dudinka, located in Russia's Krasnoyarsk Territory hosted the Arctic Cup Mixed Doubles with the support of Nornickel, featuring teams from Switzerland, Canada, Scotland, Finland, Sweden, the Czech Republic and Russia. Social investment projects have been Nornickel's long-standing priority across it's footprint. Since the 2016 launch of Taimyr ice arena, sponsored by Nornickel, Dudinka has become a host city for the world's annual northernmost curling tournament.

In the semifinals, Homan/Edin defeated Hajkova/Paul 11-7, scoring 5 n the final end to seal the win while Aitken/Menzies won 7-6 over Komarova/Goryachev. Homan/Edin finished the round-robin at 3-1, losing their opening game to Esther Juhasz/Markku Uusipaavalniemi 9-8 before stringing together wins over Anna Venevtseva/Vasilly Groshev (Krasnoyarsk, Russia) 9-6, Jenny and Mathias Perret of Switzerland 10-5 and finishing with an 8-7 win over Komarova/Goryachev.
