Niklas Edin wins WFG Masters

Niklas Edin (Karlstad, SWE) wins the WFG Masters, defeating Brad Jacobs (Sault Ste Marie, NONT) 5-4 in an extra end to win their first Grand Slam of Curling title and first for an International team. Edin with Oskar Eriksson at third with Rasmus Wrana and Christoffer Sundgren on the front end take home the $30,000CDN first place cheque along with 83.098 world ranking points, while Jacobs receives $18,000CDN and 65.291 world ranking points for their second place finish.

Edin opened the scoring stealing 1 in the first end for the 1-0 win. After blanking 2 ends, Jacobs scored a single in the fourth end to tie the game at 1, then added a steal in the fifth end. Edin scored a single in the sixth end, Jacobs responded in the seventh end scoring 2. Edin scored 2 in the eighth end to tie-up the game. Edin then stole the extra end for the 5-4 win.

In the semifinals, Edin defeated Reid Carruthers (Winnipeg, MB) 8-3 and Jacobs defeated Steve Laycock (Saskatoon, SK) 5-4 in an extra end. Laycock and Carruthers earned $12,000CDN and 50.452 ranking points for their semifinal finishes. In the quarterfinals, Edin defeated John Epping (Toronto, ON) 6-4, Jacobs defeated Mark Nichols (St. John's, NL) 6-5, while Laycock defeated David Murdoch (Stirling, SCO) 5-3 and Carruthers defeated Mike McEwen (Winnipeg, MB) 5-3. McEwen, Nichols, Murdoch and Epping earned $9,000CDN along with 35.613 ranking points for their quarterfinal finishes.

Edin went 3-1 in the 15 team qualifying round. In their opening game, Edin lost 4-2 to Jacobs, then responded with a 10-3 win over Brendan Bottcher (Edmonton, AB). Edin won against Glenn Howard (Penetanguishene, ON) 5-1, then won against Nichols 6-4 in their final qualifying round match.
