Chantale Widmer wins Tallinn Ladies International Challenger

Chantale Widmer (Schaffhausen, Switzerland) wins the Tallinn Ladies International Challenger, defeating Maria Baksheeva (St. Petersburg, Russia) 9-6 in an extra end. Widmer as skip throwing third stones with Larissa Berchtold throwing the last stones and Lara Stocker and Roxanne Heritier on the front end take home the $1,778CDN first place cheque along with 13.616 world ranking points, while Baksheeva receives $1,037CDN and 10.699 world ranking points for their second place finish.

Starting with hammer, Widmer scored 1 in the first end, Baksheeva responded in the second end scoring 2. Widmer scored 2 in the third end, with Baksheeva adding 2 in the fourth end to take a 4-3 lead. After a blank end, Widmer scored 2 in the sixth end, then added a steal in the seventh end to lead by two into the final end where Baksheeva scored 2 to tie the game. In the extra end Widmer scored 3 for the 9-6 win.

Oona Kauste (Hyvinkaa, Finland) defeated Marina Hauser (Dubendorf, Switzerland) 7-2 in the bronze medal game winning $593CDN, while Hauser won $296CDN along with both teams receiving 8.267 ranking points for their semifinal finishes.

In the semifinals, Baksheeva defeated Kauste 4-3 in an extra end while Widmer won 5-2 over Hauser. In the quarterfinals, Widmer defeated Alina Pavlyuchik (Minsk, Belarus) 4-1, Kauste won 5-4 over Claire Hamilton (Edinburgh, Scotland), Baksheeva defeated Ieva Rudzite (Riga, Latvia) 7-1 and Hauser defeated Linda Klimova (Prague, Czech Republic) 8-6. Pavlyuchik, Hamilton, Rudzite and Klimova earned 5.836 ranking points for their quarterfinal finishes.

Widmer went 4-0 in the 15 team round-robin pools qualifying round. In their opening game, Widmer defeated Ekaterina Telnova (Moscow, Russia) 6-3, won against Hamilton 6-5, and Pavlyuchik 6-5, then winning against Tene Link (Tallinn, Estonia) 9-7 in their final qualifying round match to go undefeated into the playoffs.
