winless teams and lowered fee
Cathy O and Hasselborg went winless last year as well
Maybe that's an answer
like "winless" insurance so its not a total loss for Teams..
but cant they just claim their expenses on their taxes?

Plenty of triple-knockout spiels with entry fees in the $750-$1,000 range out there. A few wins doesn't guarantee you money there, but they fill up.
And as for those "fringe" slam teams, dominant as they may be on local tours - don't kid yourself, to that point in their careers they've never made money in a given season (if they have, it's certainly not much).
The teams who are likely to go winless at Grand Slams are not going there to make money.
They go for the experience.
It's just like club teams take that next step and to a cash speil. It's just another availble step in trying to get your team to that next level.
And if you don't take those steps, you won't get where you wanna go.
Sure slams are comparatively more expensive. Throw the Canada Cup in there too. And yes, there will always be teams declining invitations.
But show me an event that has failed to get a full roster, and then talk about a problem. Until then, what gives?
Can't wait to see them back on TV where they belong!
(By the way, any actual news anyone?)

Ask Wayne Middaugh. As soon as a curler starts claiming expenses, then they have to start claiming any monies as income.
Right now, (unless Stephen Harper changes the law) winnings are non-taxable.

Millionaire Curlers
Thanks for that article
quote: And even with the higher prize money, very little tax money is likely at stake. If you take the total income and total expenses on a combined basis for the top 20 teams in Canada, the overall profit is likely not very significant – if it exists at all.
But, until the CRA decides on whether curlers are in the business of making money and joining the ranks of professional athletes, the best advice is to keep track of your receipts. With proper records, curlers will only pay tax where they have actually made a profit once all of their expenses are deducted.
Hey I like Canada's Laissez-faire ( or is it Lazy Fare) attitude toward getting serious about professional curlers and thanks to some who really have put some work into keeping Curling getting better.
However.. when are we going to get more Professional in the Management and Long-term planning for this great game we all obviously LOVE.
It was prolly a blessing in disguise that CBC is out of the picture but where is this Lucrative market of Televised or at Minimum LIVE casts of curling headed..??

For anybody wondering here is the latest that has been at least put online http://www.journalpioneer.com/News/...s-top-curlers/1 Kept hearing something was coming but still don't know if true or not and the latest if so just for the last weekend. Good the top 8 team in womens and mens are for sure coming and so looking forward to the event. I know Summerside can do a great job and hopefully it will be a great success. Amanda

If the Cactus Pheasant Classic can broadcast online why can't the Slams do it too? Give us something until they secure a national broadcaster. Make it a least look like they are trying. Seems pointless even running a Slam with out coverage...

They did broadcast the last Grand Slam event online so if there's no broadcasting there's could be another possibility they will do it for this one to it would be up to the World Curling Tour if so. Amanda

You have to wonder why the WCT hasn't severed their relationship with Allbrecht or at least begun some sort of internal investigation into the CBC fiasco.
Where did the Capital One money go that is ear-marked for the broadcast?

Okay, so I read here that Global is now going to broadcast the last Slam event. And the best Color guy they can come up with is that old fossil Duguid?
Hey, he was great decades ago-but today? Seiously, if this the best this Albrecht guy can do, its time to replace iSport...

Global is OK. Just too many clouds surrounding Albrecht.
Duguid will do just fine on a one-time color job - especially if he has vets like Martin, Howard, Stoughton, Koe, etc. reaching the finals.
Probably beef up the coverage with Cathy Gauthier (if she can get a temporary release from TSN) on sideline color and perhaps Guiseppe Pascucci (aka Joe Pascucci) from Global Winnipeg to do play by play. Pascucci also used guys like Don Finkbeiner and Jonathan Mead at past Manitoba championships when it was done by Global, not by Shaw.

I would rather listen to Don Duguid than Mike Harris (the homer)... seriously if T.S.N wasn't so busy with other prior commitments , sure they would have done men's worlds.

Did Cathy Gauthier have to get a release from TSN to the do the Safeway Provincials? Do the TSN folks have a "non rival" contract? I'd heard that some radio people have that kind of arrangement.

Prolly depends on whether Cathy Go is a temporary contractor for TSN or a season employee. If its the latter she'll probably need a release - might even need one if she's just a fill-in contractor, depending on the contract wording. TSN is the major provider of Televised curling coverage and CBC was a distant second. I can see them holding her back if it was CBC - but Global is a different kettle of fish.
Pascucci, Duguid, Cathy, Finkbeiner or Mead - those would be my picks (but Mead would have to exit early as he's still an active top curler)
If I could pick from the pool of top curlers NOW, pick one who's eliminated prior to coverage I'd go with the following guys in order of priority:
1. Kevin Martin
2. Glen Howard
3. Brad Gushue
4. Jeff Stoughton
5. Brent Laing
For the women:
1. Jill Officer
2. Jennifer Jones
3. Tricia Affleck
4. Heather Smith-Dacey
5. Amber Holland

Don Duguid is a good choice. Paired with Cheryl Bernard it will make for an interesting broadcast.

global asked ken watson , ernie richardson and several others to commentate but they all declined as they felt they couldnt live up to the expectations of some posters on curling zone .... ... hopefully don will use a description that he used brilliantly in a bonspiel where he won first prize - a fly in fishing trip ... the other skip was negotiating a tight hole for a deuce ...... " sonny sonny, sonny sonny, sonny sonny , sonny " etc". - as the rock cleared the port ... only a handful like Don that retired on the very top .. he will be terrific in pei
