Hasselborg is no doubt the overwhelming favorite for this event. Gold medal in Olympics, runner-up to JJ Jones last year's worlds when Jones was still a complete skip.

I'd put Tirinzoni on equal footing with Carey from the get-go - Silvana hasn't worked with Alina Paetz that long so their still could be a learning curve. Carey is Carey - she can be as wildly inconsistent as Val Sweeting, T Fleury, K Einarson but despite the swings - she's usually more intact than the above 3 - she's learned not to abandon hope like she used to.
Will generally deliver better percentages than Einarson, Fleury, Sweeting - and can win games she doesn't deserve (like Jones)

Head to head - I can't see her standing up to the amazing Ms. Hasselborg. Anna is the magician in this field - very solid team behind her - and she delivers a solid skipping experience to back up her totally majestic shot-making.

Watched the re-run of her gold medal game with JJ last year which went into an extra end. Jones played near top of her game, same with Kaitlyn, Jill's final big game was amazing. JJ didn't screw her rock positioning in the 10th like most folks now believe she does routinely. She gave Anna little space - and yet Anna pulled thru with a heart-wrenching hard tap for a tying deuce.

In the extra - Jones hogged her first stone badly; obviously shaken by Hasselborg's 10th end theatrics. JJ didn't have to throw her final stone (much to Jill's ebullient relief) as Anna missed slashing out a Jones stone on the button - by less than a quarter inch.

I’m watching the first draw on my Apple TV, switching between the two games on offer.

Whoever is on the sound desk on the Japan vs Scotland game is doing something I really like that I’ve not heard before. They’ve got the players mics sound balanced such that I’m hearing them louder on my sound system’s back speakers while the commentary is up front, making it easier to keep the different chats distinguishable. (I know it’s not some quirk on my system because I don’t hear the same on the Switzerland vs Russia match. )

Just checked line scores and there are some surprises. Does anyone know what the ice is like? Not implying it must be bad but sometimes it can get wonky over there to start with.

I watched the last half of swiss-russia. Ice looked fine, no mention from the commentators about ice conditions. Couple lopsided wins though, especially japan-scotland and china-sweden..

Well, obviously Hasselborg ain't gonna run thru the field unbeaten.

May be lacking a bit of motivation when she reviewed the field and her primary antagonists, Rachel Homan & JJ Jones were M.I.A.

Anna seems to get jacked up when she's pitted up against those two canadian super teams. She made short work of Homan at the Olympics, and gave Jones a terrible scare at last year's worlds before fanning her final rock slash!

Can't imagine Anna being so sour that she doesn't make playoff round but stranger things have happened. (ie. Homan's putridity at last year's Olympics, Jones missing playoff weekend for first time in STOH history!)

The score posted here for the USA vs Denmark game is backwards. USA won 8-6 in 11 ends. The standings need correcting too.

Also, the reason Finland lost to Switzerland is their clock ran out on them.

Edited to add: Score has now been fixed, thanks.

And further detail on the Finland timercide... commentators on the feed I was watching said they had an open hit for the win but couldn’t get the shot off in time.

Women's Worlds

I agree for the first day alot of upsets, Draw 1 China over Sweden (didn't see that one coming), Russia over Switzerland, Japan over Scotland (not so surprising), Draw 2 Korea over Canada.
As in most tournaments the first time teams start first game, reading the ice is all even. By their second games more talented teams are getting a better read of the ice. Cream will rise to the top at the end of round robin play.

today was not good to watch. every single game was really a contest to see who made the least mistakes. no one actually curled well for a full game. this should get better as teams adapt to the ice but..wow

sweden really struggled against china. they just couldnt make shots consistently.

feel bad for finland losing that game. they probably should have won . hoping they bounce back from that quickly

chelsea being unable to hit the paint for 1 was not promising and chelsea is already making excuses for missing shots. but its early and i trust things will get better. germany and latvia tomorrow. if they curl well those are 2 games they shouldnt really be troubled to much in

scotland losing to japan isnt surprising. they just arent that strong

In case you haven't watched Chelsea's career - she's always making excuses - even when she's tied or winning!

Lots of poor shots today - the Koreans just kept after it and eventually Carey just melted away the last 2 or 3 ends.

The Korean 3 spot was atrocious, mostly due to Chelsea missing her two bricks badly. That said, she prolly curled around 65%.

Impressed by the Koreans demeanour - and shot-making from 2nd to skip.

USA Sinclair looked like she wanted to get a loss out of the way but her opponent decided they wanted the loss more.

Feel bad for the distracted danish blondes - they snookered themselves in the final end after a promising start - and essentially had no shot to win or even tie even though they were tied coming home w/ hammer.

Tirinzoni also scooped up a shaky 1st win - when Finnish Oona Koste gave up the ghost!

PS. If I were Cheryl I'd be mighty peeved. Looks like TSN decided to go with only Vic & Russ for the round-robin and then dispatch Cheryl for the weekend playoffs. Since when does TSN use 2 man crews? Since about never, I'd say - other than morning draws when they tag off to Muddy & Gauthier!

Guess TSN needs to scrimp. Cheryl's hotel room for 6 extra days would have cost a fortune. Same with food and transportation! (sarcasm)

There are only two teams which have a good chance of winning this event, namely: Carey and Hasselborg ( H'B ).

This is easily the best team Carey has ever assembled and after a delayed start this season are just starting to gel. The fact that they curled so well in the Scotties and were able to defeat Homan* in the finals, should be concerning to every other competitor.

But given her lack of "Motivation", it's going to be very difficult for H'B to defeat
Canada. For sure, H'B is not a "magician" by any stretch, and she's certainly not one of the brightest lights on the "T" either. Tirinzoni/Paetz, who are Not on some kind of imaginary "learning curve" after some eight months - that's the least of their problems - will need luck to see bronze.

* Any team which defeated Homan & Co. during the entire 2018/'19 season had to curl extremely well. Having won the World Cup in September, the Grand Slam of Curling in Thunder Bay, the Boost National, the Grand Slam Canadian Open, the provincial Scotties, as well as being a finalist in the Canadian Scotties and the Grand Slam Beef Masters, they have now accumulated $ 160, 000 YTD and rank No.1 on the WCT.

Years ago I predicted Homan & Co. could peak as soon as 2020. Bad news for some Manitobans, especially the Idolizers, but for the rest of Canada particularly Ontario and Alberta..........

I could be mistaken (never wrong!!) but wasn't there a worlds a few years back where none of them actually went but called the games from the TSN studios in Toronto watching the monitors? Pretty hard to get a "feel" for the ice or arena conditions from 1000's of kms away.

Yet they have 20 guys, no exaggeration, on hand 24 hours for NHL trade deadline. 10 any other NHL game. And since they lost the major rights to the NHL to Sportsnet, their audiences MIGHT be as high as Scotties or Brier or Worlds audiences. MIGHT.

Where's Statman when you need him. He'd have the numbers.

Definitely agree w/ Cowboy that this is the best team Carey has ever skipped - tons of horse-power under the hood.

Chelsea's run at the Scotties was very efficient - mostly good to great games, only a minor letdown or two - Dana & Rachel are a terrific duo and have the experience & savvy to roll with the punches when Chelsea goes off on tangents or starts doing play-by-play during ends.

Sarah also had a couple (or more) lapses today so its not all on Chels.

Homan & Co. are trained killers who will shot-pelt you into submission.

Team Jones is a wild & woolly affair - JJ seldom delivers boredom with her all-out offensive style - she'll expose herself to plenty of big ends while trying to assemble her own. When Jones gets a 1 or 2 pt. lead then its all-defense. Fun to watch.

Homan is cruelly efficient - but plays machine-like and conservatively. Carey is somewhere in between. Today she was relatively conservative because the ice confused her.

Should get better as he command of the ice takes hold.

But other teams will too!

I wondered about that, too. I only caught the tail end of the draw 2 telecast, but I had the suspicion they were calling it off a monitor. No post-game interview for one thing. Was there a Vic “travelogue” off the top?

Disappointing opener for Canada but only one game. So much discussion before Chelsea’s final shot, including a time-out. Made me wonder about her confidence as she settled into the hack...

Chels got into early trouble in the 10th end - after barfing up an awful 3-spot to Korea in 9
She made a fabulous angle raise hit from a corner guard to the 4 foot on her first rock, but the Korean skip made a beautiful straight runback to spill Carey's counter - the Koreans got unlucky and rolled out . . . . so Chelsea had 2 awkward draws to an open house for the tying point. . . . her first choice was a very wide out-turn that would have seen her take ice on the outside of the 12 ft - the other was an awkward draw thru a port with ice just off the centre - she chose the latter and despite a furious brushdown from Ferguson & Brown, the rock crashed on the long guard - prolly wouldn't have made it to the house if it hadn't crashed.

i dont know if the ice is tricky but the numbers through the first 2 raws today are still pretty average. i know numbers arent the ball but from what i've seen they're fairly acurate here. no one seems to have a firm handle on the ice. everyone just kind of average right now

One of my questions re: Team Scotland (Young Sophie Jackson) answered.

Prior speculation about whether they would be forced to bring in Eve Muirhead as their alternate player - especially when SCF wanted Muirhead to go to Worlds instead of Jackson even though Sophie had obliterated Muirhead 3 times in Scottish championship.

Well, they didn't send Muirhead. Pretty close - they sent Muirhead lead Lauren Gray - who was Muirhead's main tormentor in Scotland before Muirhead brought her on board - at lead.

Good choice - Gray flies under the radar better than Eve. She can play all positions, too - which is good for the young scots - who are already in deep trouble 2 losses in!

Sophie's injured. Vic or Russ mentioned it - but because they don't have any boots on the ground they couldn't provide any more info.

Lauren Gray came in from the bullpen to skip - and they just won!

Sophie Jackson is apparently injured, and left after the second end of their game against China. Lauren Gray has been playing/skipping since then. No word on what the injury is or how long it may keep her sidelined.
