Boring Brier

Anyone finding that the brier has gotten very predictable the last few years?? It's the same 3 prov's that have a chance AB MAN ONT. every other prov is just there as fillers... Just doesn't seem to be exciting to watch.. Anyone know who the last prov was to win outside of the 3 I mentioned? I think it was Quebec menard maybe???

Yes, it was Menard in 2006 that was the last team not from Alberta, Manitoba, or Ontario to win. Just for history's sake, I looked as far back as 1980 to see the winner of the last 31 Briers. Out of those, only seven were not won by one of those three provinces.

You had Folk (Saskatchewan) in '80, Hackner (Northern Ontario) in '82 and '85, Folk again (British Columbia) in '94, McAulay (again BC) in '00, Dacey (Nova Scotia) in '04, and then Menard.

So 24 of the last 31 Briers have been won by Alberta, Manitoba, or Ontario. Maybe that simply means that most of Canada's best curlers come from those provinces. What's wrong with that?

The simple fact is that teams coming out of PEI, the Territories, etc. cannot afford the massive travel expenses that would be necessary to compete at the same level as the top teams at the Brier. It's geography. If that makes it boring, so be it. The best teams are the best teams, wherever they come from.

Pretty darn boring, I'll admit as much.

Not even close to the star-power at the Scotties - even Bryan Mudryk was trying hard not to fall asleep this a.m.

But it can only get better as the biggest back stories are Manitoba surmounting a miserable start (by Fowler) and Goo being in the glue at 0-3, having to fight back like an Olympian should be capable of.

Scott Manners is finally giving the home province some decent representation.

Love the Blues Brothers, aka Men in Black!!!

Gushue does it. Plan your season, book travel early and get some sponsors.

Yes Gushue does it and his season likely costs him $120,000+

Teams from PEI, NWT, etc would have difficulty securing sponsors anywhere near the amount needed to make a go of it. It's simple geography as teams from Ontario and the west can play hard for 1/2 or less than what Gushue spends.

Curling is definitely a labor of love, but at some point the mortgage still has to be paid.

not enough money in curling to attract 100 dedicated 20 year olds to take a chance .. plus dividing by 4 team members dilutes the prize .. of the top 20 teams in the world 15 have been around 20+ years

mcewen guys make abt $30,000 each
howard martin abt $20,000 each plus sponsors

ferbey koe gushue stoughton $10,000 each
ulsrud menard jacobs virtue $5000 each

rest dont make expenses

rory mcelroy earned $1 mil for the weekend, nfl , nhl, nba make $400,000 - $10 mil --

there are a few govt $10,000 each for brier and medal winners . but spending 12 weeks curling makes it an amateur sport

olympics made martin practise 6 years ago , and soshi is the carrot for top 10 teams - dec 2013 about 20 top players will retire from the grind

a tsn subscription channel like the jets - with $100 annual subscription getting 2 mil to watch so the tims, dominion, m&M , scotties, ford and cap one etc keep paying might work --- need some $100,000 paydays 6x a year

Then host some major cashspiels that will draw the big teams into your neck of the woods.

Curling viewers are thrifty.... The scott and brier attendees pony up $1000 a couple ... Slam couples $200 ... The rest watch for free.. Only 600 signed up for curltv at $75 a year 5 years ago. ... Quality is better now .. I would pay $100 a year for a curling channel If tsn Expanded their excellent coverage .... But there arent many teams that i could sit thru ten ends for .. Maybe 20

I hate to agree but I have to. It has been the worst Brier I have seen in a long time so far. Almost all the top teams playing poorly. Some decent underdog teams playing better than expected atleast. Only Koe has been spectacular. Based on the level of play so far he should easily win this.
