total farce of world curling?
I'm posting this now so no one can claim sour grapes...
The so called Men's world curling champ could be a team that lost 2 out of 3 to the second place team as well could have a record of 9-4 compared to 11-1.....and still call themselves WORLD CHAMPS????
Sort of a farce isn't it?

Teams whose round robin or regular season records are not the best often win championships. what is your preferred championship playoff system?

They deserve it if they get there. Would you still be bitching if Canada was in Scotland's position?
If you want a playoff with 4 teams on 11-1 or 9-2 records it's not going to happen

It's the downside of the page playoff system. Overall, the pros of the system outweigh the cons IMO. But the biggest con is the fact that you might have to beat the same twice (in the 1v2 game and then the Champ game)

This question arises evey year but most of it is dictated by television. The purest format is round robin with the team with the best record declared the winner. (used many moons ago in the Brier) but this will never happen again. I think Canada would have had it clinched this year with 3 draws to go!
So the current format may not be perfect and could be tweaked a bit. Myself, I would eliminate the 1-2 game and give the round robin winner the bye to he final and the second place team a bye to the semi. But again that is one less draw for TV to show.
Basically. every team knows the format going in so just be prepared to win your last game in the final and no excuses.

Could do what I think Newfoundland? does, and that is if a team is undefeated they must be beat twice in the final. Obviously this wouldn't apply here with Howard losing to New Zealand earlier.

NFL: The New York Giants beat the previously undefeated Patriots in the Super Bowl and are crowned champs.
Baseball: The '87 Minnesota Twins barely make the playoff with a crappy record. Then, based on two great starting pitchers and a closer and Kirby Puckett, win the World Series.
Hockey: Teams seeded eighth in the playoffs win the Stanley Cup.
Basketball: Again, bottom seeds rise up to make the finals.
Just because their regular season is long and Worlds is over a week does not mean that we are different than "real" sports.

But Baseball and Basketball are best of 7 finals. Curling much more like football- one game takes all.

It does come down to a,"how many times do I have to beat these guys" thing.
Give a blind dog enough chances and he will eventually pee on a tree!
I have never liked sudden death, at least two out of three is reasonable, especially when you plan to call yourself "world champ".

Oh get over it lolar. Every major has two portions of competition. The first is a qualifying round (ie the round robin) to establish the best four teams to advance to the playoff round.
Your results in the qualifying round seed you and reward you. Plus every team knows in the playoff round that its a completely different event where your previous RR efforts don't matter.
Yes, you can whine that its dictated by television. But if you don't think those stands were empty enough for the final (jeez, it looked like half the attendance was the teams and volunteers waiting for the closing ceremonies) imagine how desolate the stands would have been for the final two round robin draw with Canada already the clear winner.
Every team knows going in what the format is and has little or no problem with it. Once again, no need to reinvent the wheel here, it aint broke.

Truth be told.....no matter what format they use, there'll always be those that aren't happy with it. Page Playoff isn't perfect...but it's pretty good.
