They just did not have enough time, only 3 days, to level it out and get everything set up. On sheet 5, they actually ran out of room to flood anymore, the water was up to the top of the temporary boards. It is too bad because it is taking away from the quality of the curling. I feel bad for the ice makers as I know they tried hard to make it as best as possible, but it was not possible to fix in the short amount of time. Also, the rocks are pretty bad as well, not sure if they might try to find rocks from another club next year, everyone is struggling with them.
You would not have seen Hans W., Mark S., Jamie B., Dave, M., or any of the other top ice makers commit to make ice in an arena without first doing a pre-event facility audit months in advance. This inspection would have included but is not limited to utilizing a transit/level to determine how level the existing hockey ice is, plant capacity, air flow control, humidity control, etc., etc.
Ice makers reputation are built (or destroyed) on the quality of ice and rocks they provide to these athletes and a top end ice maker would ensure both venue and rocks were good or they would not make a commitment to make the ice. I do not know who made the ice in Victoria biut it appears they did not do their due diligence prior to the event.
