check out some of these New faces in the mens's worlds

skip of German team, John Jahr... who is he and how did he ever beat Andy Kapp to represent Germany? Andy and team must of had a bad finals ... and USA skipped by Heath McCormick ....who is he and where does he hail from? my guess Wisconsin or Minnesota? .. in closing skip Peter de Boer from New Zealand another new comer to the worlds.. I would think these teams would have to travel far and wide to get the level of competition they need to stay on top of their game...curling fans will be scratching their heads no doubt... if I remember correctly Scottish skip Brewster celebrates his birthday during these worlds, hey he could pull off another one?

de Boer

de Boer beat Korea twice in the Semi-finals to earn his spot at the WWCCs. Upseting South Korea at the PACCs was their tournament and they were all but spent when they played Team Rui last November...

I think de Boer is an ex-pat from Scotland. Two of the Becker clan is on that squad.

THANKS for shedding some light on 'who's who"? curling circles are tight as they say , funny how former Canadians "drift " around THE GLOBE AND find a new 'home " to curl out of?

Johnny Jahr is an ode to the past in the mid-80s when he used to curl with Rodger Schmidt. He won the Euro title in '85 as second for Schmidt, and last appeared in the Worlds in 1996 in Hamilton. Andy Kapp has retired from competitive curling, and the rest of his team is being skipped by Daniel Herberg, whom Jahr beat in the Best of 3 Final to represent Germany.

Team USA:

Heater McCormick was born in Michigan, but grew up in Ontario and still lives there. He had a successful Junior career and a fairly successful Mens career so far.

Bill Stopera has been a good curler out of New York for some time.

Martin Sather was born in Alaska and played in Junior Worlds. He has since moved to New York.

Dean Gemmell was born in Ontario into a curling family and now lives in New Jersey. He left the game for a long time, but is now a dedicated curler. Dean is the producer/host of The Curling Show podcast and also co-authored Fit To Curl with John Morris (Kevin Martin's third).

The team made the playoffs at US Nationals last year...their first year together. They entered three cashspiels in Canada this year with decent results including a win over Koe. They won gold at Nationals with an undefeated record.

If Worlds was being held in North America, I think this team would be a lock for the playoffs. As is, I think they will battle with Canada, Sweden (assuming Edin can play), Norway, China and Scotland for the podium. Even as relative newcomers and many timezones from home, I would not be surprised to see an all North American final.

I don't get the talk about China. Yes they have done well on tour but they did okay for themselves last year too and did nothing. Aside from that debut year at worlds they have done nothing and I do not expect them to do anything this year either

Liu won the Manitoba Lotteries spiel with an undefeated record. They qualified for the playoffs with A side wins over Bohn and McNamee. They beat Rob Fowler in the finals.

China now has Lorne Hamblin coaching. If you are going to bet against this team, don't bet a lot.

I don't know, I agree. I don't expect China to do anything. Doing well on tour is one thing but they have yet to prove that 2008 wasn't a fluke

Unlike the WWCCs where the Hamblins were put in to get a fresh set of eyes for Betty's team, Lorne has been with the Mens Team for the entire season. Team Liu won a bonspiel in Green Bay this year as well.

Wondering if the Chinese Curling Association feels that the Mens Team is ready to take that leap that Betty's squad made in 2008-2010...

Two new teams - by this thread's standards - meet and the less known comes up on top. Ger 8 USA 6. It is going to be an interesting week. Saw NZ pushing SCO's game and Cda was taken the distance by Fra.

If you like pop-up ads, you'll love this coverage of the Draw Two match between the Swiss and the Swedes. (Three cheers for British EuroSport!)

I took the under 11.5. That ice really threw a few teams for a loop in the first few ends.
