Ryan Fry leaving Team Gushue
From Team Gushue Facebook Page:
quote: After careful discussion and deliberation, Team Gushue and Ryan Fry have decided to part ways. Ryan has been a member of the team for 4 years. Brad, Adam, Geoff and Bas wish him all the luck and success in the future.

Does this mean Nichols is going to return to Gushue's team?

I would almost bet money on it.

Won't help. Nichols only makes Gushue 25% better. And if he has an off game, even less. Not enough to win a Brier.

Hate to say it but Fry being off Gushue's team enabled Gushue to be way better. Nichols will make Gushue's team way better than 25% because he's a team guy. I would be surprised if Stoughton would take Fry. Nothing against Ryan but he's not the package deal.

I don't get the constant trashing of Gushue's ability. He was one win away from winning in 2007 in Hamilton, with an inferior team, won the Trials and Olympic Gold Medal and is even one of the few Skips to win a Grand Slam title. Even with their "struggles" this year, Team Gushue ranks in the Top 10 in the World.
With many changes to the lineup, there's still one constant to that team over all these years.
Brad Gushue
He's a very underrated player, taking Newfoundland to the #1 spot in the 2011 Brier in the Round Robin with an inferior team when you compared it to Martin, Howard, and Stoughton and while they didn't get it done in the playoffs, he knows how to beat these elite teams, yet doesn't get any of the credit himself.
It's always someone else, Russ Howard for the Trials/Olympics, Mark Nichols, etc. They've all been huge to his success, but Brad has still always thrown the last rock, and the pressure shots have always been laid on his shoulders.

Totally agree with Gerry. I sick and tired hearing people giving no respect for curlers who have done well but they are struggling or even not there all over them and guess one not one of these poster have came close to what Gushue has done. See you in a few weeks. Looking forward to the slam. Will be doing some score keeping. Amanda

As someone pointed out earlier about a couple guys he may join forces with, it would all depend if Ryan moves back to MB. If not mistaken I think he bought a house in NFLD. So if he stays in NFLD, it would be interesting to see a new team get formed with others who have experience.
NFLD team possibility???:
Shawn Adams (Brier runnerup representing NS)
Mark Nichols (Olympic gold medalist)
Ryan Fry
Jamie Korab (olympic gold medalist)
Manitoba team possibility??:
Jason Gunnlaugson
Ryan Fry
choose from a huge pool of players
Steve Gould (great friend of Ryan's & teammates for a few years)

It does just seem like every single season Brad is getting a new team member. Ever since Jamie Korab left I dont think he has held a line up for more than a season
I dont know why. Maybe looking for that team that will finally bring him a brier. I just wonder what happens now because there aren't a lot of great options he can bring in to play third for him from new found land. Either he moves Adam or Geoff up to third or once again goes out of province to bring someone in.

Unfortunately this is a direct result of trying to keep up with the powerhouse provinces (Alberta, Ontario, Manitoba) where the talent pool is so much deeper than it is on the coast or up north. Curling has developed into such a team sport where every member of the line-up from Lead to Skip need to be world class to win the Brier, Olympics or even Provincials for some.
So for Brad to reach his goal of winning the Brier and another Olympic title, he has to recruit from outside of NFLD or he himself will have to relocate. This is a difficult task as there are many factors in play: economy, family, travel etc. that put even more pressure on the dynamics of the team.
Hopefully everything works out for Brad as there really are not that many who put everything they have into this game we love.

It also seems he is very happy to be in Newfoundland. That's understndable and commendable as he is an Olympic hero and very much at home there.

Has there been any report of whether this was initiated by Ryan, or by Gushue?

The Brad Gushue rink announced today via their Facebook page that they will be making an announcement on a replacement for third Ryan Fry at the Player’s Championship (April 17-22 in Summerside) within the next couple of weeks. They expect to make an announcement on a full time replacement at the end of the season. When asked last week if PEI’s Brett Gallant is being considered, Gushue said “He’s a player who would be on the list. He is from Atlantic Canada, he’s played with Adam [Casey] before, he’s a really good player. But we have several other names we’ll be discussing as well.”

Odds on favorite at this point is Brett Gallant in my opinion. Brett finds himself in a similar situation on the Island in that if he stays put he probably does not get beyond an annual trip to the Brier. I am not convinced that this will get Brad much further ahead right now because of the age/experience of his crew but if you are looking to build something for after Sochi this might just work out.
I am not a Brad fan, he is a great player no doubt, but not a fan for several reasons that are irrelevant to this post. The only way Brad will be able to make some real noise right now would be for him to back his bags and move west.
I don't see that happening so the move with Brett is probably the best way to go for him and develop a rock solid team over a few years. I guess we will find out soon enough is that the direction he takes. Stay tuned.

Brad 'Goo' Gushue is one of those constants on the canadian curling scene. Much like other constants named Kevin Martin, Kevin Koe, Glen Howard, Jennifer Jones, Colleen Jones, Kelly Scott, Amber Holland, Jeff Stoughton, Cathy O, Jill Officer, Dawn Askin, etc.
His accomplishments on the Olympic stage can only be matched by K Martin, no one else.
Wish you all the best Goo - perhaps making your move to part company with R -Fry on the eve of Stoughton trying out Mark Nichols.....
If Fry wanted to unleash the wrath of Ryan on Goo then he'd stay on the rock and form a team of his own - especially if Goo is having trouble finding a great third man.

Ryan Fry's comments on Facebook:
quote: Well, looks like my Newfoundland adventure is coming to an end. I would like to say thank you to everyone I've met in this great city. I was treated amazing and wouldn't have changed a thing. Now off to the next adventure...Just not sure what that will be yet.
Seems like he's moving on from The Rock, and heading back to the mainland somewhere. Hard to say where Ryan goes, but sounds like he's got some options. The experience gained playing with Gushue the last few years will set him up well for the future.
It's going to be an interesting offseason as team juggles their lineups to try and qualify for the 2013 Trials.
