2012-2013 Spiel Season

Kinda thought we should split the Cash Circuit away from the Random Stuff thread or it might get long.

I was pleasantly surprised to see Team Pete Fenson will be in British Columbia this weekend in the Prestige Hotels Classic. I find it odd that the Womens half of this spiel looks to be more full and with more recognizible names.

Corbett and Corbett are playing in the Ingersoll out in the Maritimes. Anybody know who their front end will be?

Team Pizza Pete wins its opener in BC. The younger USA team drops its opener to a good team in an extra end.

Corbett also drops the opener in an extra end.

Weird stuff going on in British Columbia. On the Ladies side, neither A qualifier is from Canada. The Russians take one side of the draw and Ott takes the other.

Weird on the Mens side is that Team Cotter drops both early games to be the first team relegated to the C brackets. Jason Gunnlaugson jetted out west to join that team and they are expected to do some pretty good things. It's very early, but this ain't a good start for what should be one of the better west coast Canadian rinks.

Are you wondering why you have yet to see National Champions Team Pottinger on the cash curcuit? Nicole Jaaranstad just had a baby. Look for the team to invest their time and money later in the season.

Are you wondering if you can get an early bet down on Team Potter to make it to Worlds? Be careful. Cassie is now expecting her first child. Her due date is March 17th (St. Patrick's Day) and that will impact their curling season. Congrats to her and her husband.

Da Curse

Tuck was that the reverse curse on Cotter, or do they read this thread and you fired them up?

No "Reverse Curse of Tuck"...just pointing out what is obvious in BC, but not here in the USA. Americans might not know the Cotter rink just yet, but they should be very strong...but Willy knows that...he's just jabbing me.

Interesting weekend coming up. Pottinger and Potter make it to the ice against formidible competition. Pottinger opens against Sweeting who was a surprise B Qualifier last week (with wins over Kelly Scot and Heather Nedowin). Potter needs to avoid Morning Sickness for her 11:30am game against the highly-reguarded Stefanie Lawton rink.

Stu Sells Spiel looks really interesting. I'm glad that the Craig Brown rink and the Ply/George rink are facing a field that includes McEwen, Epping, Gushue, Fowler, Stoughton, Howard and Hemmings. I'm not sure that Jeremy Roe's team is ready for this field, but that is how you get better...to a certain extent. The Damon rink from out east is entered and I'm not sure that was wise. Perhaps. I've never seen them play. Not only are there wellknown teams in the field, some of the other rinks are really good (Brad Jacobs, Joe Frans and Chris Gardner just to name a few powerful rinks that are not as well known). I wish Team Damon well and hope they are competitive in their games and hope they are competitive enough to improve. Guaranteed that they will come back with some great memories.

Brady Clark will get tested out west. His team is in a pool with Kevin Martin. What a blast! I think that Brady can hang with most of the field and I hope he gives Martin a good game. Again, memories that last forever.

insanely jealous of teams that get to test themselves against the best...I used to love that

I should mention that team Roe will be without Maskel this weekend, who is apparently having back troubles. They were frantically searching for a last-second spare as of yesterday. No idea if they found someone or not.

I know Brian Damon and Mike Stefanik fairly well, having played both of them at various times in the GNCC. They played this same event last year and though I don't think they won a game, each successive game was more competitive than the last. They want to get better, and I think we can all respect that drive. Their front end is brand-new to the competitive scene, and I think Skinner is recently aged out of 5-and-under spieling so it'll be quite a test for the whole team.

All in all, this field is probably just too strong, but I applaud their willingness to tangle with the best.

Brady Clark starts the round robin 0-2 with games upcoming against Willy Lyburn and Kevin Martin. This is going to sound weird to those who haven't been there...but this is how teams are bonded.

Pottinger and Potter are generating more babies than wins. Both rinks are 0-2 and down in the C qualifiers. I guarantee you that one of them will win a game. (they play eachother this afternoon)

The Roe and Damon rinks are 0-2 at the Stu Sells and it ain't gettin' much easier. Roe will face Wayne Tuck Jr. (Canada's more talented and better looking Tuck) and Damon goes up against the colorful Guy Hemmings. The Mens side of that spiel has a good lineup.

Plys/George continues to impress as defeat Hemmings in their opener...then drop a game to Stoughton...but bounch back and thump current Manitoba champion Rob Fowler.

Craig "Mr. Impressive" Brown started out with a win over Wayne Tuck Jr...then an extra end loss against the team that I pick to win the Canadian Olympic Trials (McEwen)...then thump Higgs (the curling team, not the boson).

As a side note: World Champion Glenn Howard dropped his opening game in an extra end by giving up a steal. Then they were down 3 in the seventh before coming back to defeat Kean. Poor Kean. He thumps Damon before taking a loss and going to the start of the B. His first game in the B is against Glenn Howard. He almost wins, but now heads to the C where his first game will be against Rob Fowler...who is also a World Champion. Such is life when you enter a cashspiel to measure yourself against the best of the best.

Not a great weekend for the USA. At least, not by the standard of recent weeks. Certainly not by the standard of some other non-Canadian nations this weekend. (China looks particularly strong in the Winnipeg spiel)

The gals got rocked in the Autumn Gold. Brady Clark did manage one win out west. Brady stole a point in the first end to temporarily lead Kevin Martin. That must have been a hoot...even if it was a shortlived hoot.

Roe and Brown both got a couple a wins at the Stu Sells and Brownie took McEwen to an extra end. Not bad.

George/Plys was the bright spot. They grabbed some wins before dropping the B Qualifier and the C Qualifier. For an impressive 24 hours, they knocked off Fowler, Jacobs and Howard. That might be as impressive a day as any US team has ever had in a cashspiel...but the next 24 hours didn't go quite as well.

The cashspiel thing will continue to heat up as more and more teams find their shoes and hit the road. The St. Paul Cash is next weekend and lots of playdown teams are entered. The Mens half will see some good Canadian rinks entered...but perhaps not as many as in years past. The Ladies half does not look to have any Canadian entries and that is disappointing. While adding tours and subtours here in our country is neccessary and great, attracting good teams from across the border and across the oceans would really make them much better and more beneficial to USA curling.

The brackets are up for St. Paul and Birr appears to headline the Pool Of Death. Sorry, Boo Boo.

Actually, the brackets look fairly even. C does look like a tougher road than the others...but it's pretty even.

An undefeated Birr takes three in the 6th to go back up on George/Plys in the semis. Schuster continues to hang big ends as he had done all week to take control in the other semi.

Wish there was a webcast of these games.

Birr takes his 7 game undefeated streak up against Face Shusters 6 game winning streak. Since Shuster lost to Eric Fenson in the first game they have curled well and have taken a lot of 3 point ends along with a couple 4's and a 5 I believe. Birr seems to have been in control of every game.

Trying my best Tuck imitation, he must be farming. Too wet for that here.

Not to forget the Ladies, experience rules as Patti Lank and Margie Smith take Cassie Potter and Becca Hamilton out in close semi games to meet for the final.

The pools are up for Bemidji and Pool A is definately The Pool Of Death.

Cassie Potter does not appear to be playing. That surprises me.

I hope that the rainy weather abates and I can finish off harvest. If it remains wet, I will probably zip over and watch a couple of draws.

I did drive up to Manitoba and watched some games last weekend. If I get a minute, I'll type out some thoughts in the Ranking thread.

Craig Brown is in Canada this weekend against a good field. Heater McCormick and his rink is supporting Heater's home club in Sarnia.

Another good field and spiel in Canada for Heater and the Ducklings. They, along with team Birr are at the Mount Lawn Gord Carroll Classic. Dean and Bill had a long drive home from Sarnia due to the storm. Guessing they might have had to drive to Whitby as well since Newark just opened yesterday.

On the distaff side (keeping with the horse theme), some are at the Royal LePage.

Roe makes the finals playoffs but loses the quarters, looks like they are gelling. Watched Birr take Glen Howard to an extra end Friday but then they seemed to lose steam. McCormick seemed to struggle.

On the ladies side Lank and Carlson came out hot while Amy Wright loses her first two 6-7. But now it is Wright i the the Semi's tied at 1the in the fourth.

Yep, Biter...Lank making it to the A qualifier and winning the B qualifier is the best news of the weekend. The bad news is that she lost the A qualifier to Team Russia. Revenge was taken by Amy Hatton-Wright as she comes through the C bracket to beat the Russkies at the start of the playoffs.

Birr taking Howard to an extra end was kinda exciting. Heater not being Heater, however, throws a chill on the weekend.

The Juniors did OK in Ontario...but just OK. The Doering rink out of Winnipeg looks like a team of the near future...but that is for a Manitoba thread.

With half the spiel coming from the Slam side and half the spiel coming from the Sunlife side, it doesn't fit into CZ's normal pages.

You'll have to google Rogers Masters of Curling to get to their own site for a better picture of the two fields playing for one title.

I ain't sayin' the draw is right and I ain't sayin' it's wrong...but I appreciate the imagination needed to merge these two spiels.

Tough weekend

If you throw out Mark Johnson, who I guess is not a USA eligible team. I think our guys were 2-12. I know I have a keen grasp of the obvious, but thats a rotton smelling weekend..
